This page of our online a to z glossary is for UK house buyers terms beginning with the letter 'B'.

  • Banker's draft - the payment of funds guaranteed by a bank. A banker's draft is more secure than a personal cheque.
  • Boundaries - these are the limits of the property or the land surrounding it.
  • Bridging loan - a loan enabling a buyer to complete the purchase of another house before receiving the money from the sale of the currently owned one.
  • Building Blocks - these are hollow or solid blocks of clay, gypsum or concrete. Because they are larger, building blocks are cheaper and quicker to lay than bricks.

  • Buttress - a support which is joined at right angles to a wall to strengthen it.
  • Buy-to-let mortgage - a special mortgage designed to encourage investors to buy houses to lease to tenants.
