UK House Buyers Glossary

Here is a glossary of terms that UK property buyers will find helpful.

  • Airbricks - bricks with perforations in them which are built into walls to ventilate a room or the underside of a wooden floor.
  • Alcove - a recessed space in a wall, usually vaulted and in old houses was the place for a bed.
  • Apron - a raised panel, sometimes shaped and decorated, immediately below a window sill.
  • Arch - wedge-shaped masonry or bricks arranged in a semi-circle and usually supporting the weight above it.
  • Architrave - a wooden moulding around a door or window which covers the gap between the frame and the wall.
  • Asking price - this is the price that the seller of a property hopes to sell it for.
  • Aspect - the direction that a house or room faces. So, if a room is described as having a southern aspect, it means that it faces directly south.
