Useful DIY Tips And Information About Wallpaper And Wallpapering

Here some DIY tips and information about wallpaper and wallpapering that a home handyman will find useful.

Batch Numbers

When buying wallpaper, try to ensure that the batch numbers for all the rolls are the same (the batch numbers are stamped on the wrapper). You need do this as you will find that the colours vary slightly between different batches. For this reason, always buy more wallpaper that you expect to use, as your batch number may be sold out by the time you return to the DIY store to buy more.

Bubbles

If air bubbles appear after you have hung a length of wallpaper, you probably have not allowed enough time for the wallpaper to soak before hanging it.

Room Size

Use wallpaper with bold vertical stripes to make the walls of a room appear to be higher than they actually are. Horizontal stripes will make a room seem longer and lower.

Standard Roll

In the UK the standard size for a roll of wallpaper is 10m by 530mm (33 feet by 21 inches). In other countries the sizes may be different.

Wallpaper Paste

To avoid lumps you should always add the wallpaper paste to water and not water to paste. Plus you should stir the water while you are adding the paste.

Walls and Ceilings

If you are going to cover the ceiling and the walls of a room with the same wallpaper, it is best to choose a wallpaper with a small pattern. This will help avoid problems with matching the pattern where the celing and walls meet.
